With five underclassmen in its boat, the Princeton women’s lightweight rowing team knows that any experience from the 2013 IRA Championships would be beneficial moving forward.

While the Tigers would have certainly liked to end their season on the medal stand, they can be optimistic that they are moving in the right direction.

Princeton finished fifth in the IRA national championship Sunday afternoon on Lake Natoma in Sacramento.

Stanford won its fifth straight national championship, knocking off top-seeded Radcliffe by nearly four full seconds to win the title in 6:47.17. The Crimson finished second in 6:51.12, while Wisconsin overcame a tough opening split to win bronze in 6:54.80.

Princeton held fourth after the first split, but Wisconsin and Bucknell both made a push to move past the Tigers by the middle point of the race. Bucknell was able to extend its lead for fourth place by more than three seconds at the 1500-meter mark, which was too much for the young Princeton boat to overcome.

The varsity four finished fourth in its morning final as Fordham used a very strong final split to make up a deficit and grab the bronze medal. Wisconsin took the gold.

"Both our boats stuck their bows out aggressively in the finals," head coach Paul Rassam said. "They can take pride in the fight they showed. But it would be a lie to say there isn't disappointment."

The Tigers will say goodbye to three seniors in their varsity eight, including co-captains Alex Morss and Olivia Panaccio Treshman. They joined coxswain Christy Kaelin in one final row during the biggest race of the year.

Morss was a big part of one of Princeton’s best boats in program history. She was in the 2011 Eastern champion, as well as the IRA national runner-up.
