The 15th-ranked Princeton men’s water polo team captured the Ivy League Championship title in thrilling fashion, defeating Brown 13-12 Sunday in Philadelphia, Pa. The Tigers topped Penn, 20-15, in the semifinals to advance to the first-place contest earlier in the day.

Only the win over Brown counts towards Princeton’s overall record, improving the Tigers to 14-4 on the year, as Penn is a club program. Princeton resumes league play at home next weekend, facing George Washington on Friday, Oct. 25 and Fordham and Iona the next day.

A two-goal first quarter deficit was not enough to derail the Tigers in their semifinal victory over Penn. Down 5-3, Princeton responded with a rousing 14-7 run over the second and third quarters to put away the contest versus the host-Quakers.

Kurt Buchbinder and Thomas Nelson led the charge with four goals each, and Sam Butler, Curtis Fink and Jovan Jeremic all netted three goals.

Along with seeing six players record multi-goal outings, both Butler and Nelson made three steals, while goalie Tyler Amina notched 11 saves, three assists and two steals.

In a much more hostile championship game, the Tigers were forced to employ a fourth quarter rally to overcome the Bears.

Princeton opened with a 3-2 lead in the first, but Brown countered with a 4-3 run in the second quarter to knot things up six-all at halftime. The Bears’ carried over their offensive run through the third to go up 10-9.

Fink tied things up, 10-10, with 5:02 to play in regulation, but Princeton was unable to retake the lead on a man-up opportunity.

Brown responded with a goal of its own at 3:01, but it was not enough to corral control for good. Goals from Jeremic, Buchbinder and the game-winner from Nelson over the final 2:30 edged Princeton past Brown for the victory.
