Game 13: Princeton vs. Columbia

(5-4-4, 0-3-1)

Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013
Roberts Stadium • Princeton, N.J.

(7-4-3, 0-2-2)

Box Score

2:47: Columbia's Beverly Leon got ahold of a loose ball in the box and sent it in

11:17: Princeton's Melissa Downey dribbled through the box and around Columbia keeper Allison Spencer

13:59: Princeton's Jessica Haley took one-touch passes from Lauren Lazo and Tyler Lussi and headed it in

22:23: Princeton's Lauren Lazo cut her way through the Columbia defense and found the net

50:41: Columbia's Alexa Yow took a pass upfield from Kimmy Bettinger, weaved through the Tiger defense and around goalkeeper Darcy Hargadon to find the net

77:29: Columbia's Beverly Leon had the equalizer, as she got tangled up with her Princeton defender on the edge of the 18-yard box and got the PK call

7-0: Princeton outshot Columbia by that margin in the two overtime periods, but couldn't get the winning goal. The Tigers outshot the Lions 27-5 overall. One of those OT shots was a Haley Chow try off the crossbar with less than four minutes left in the second OT.

Jessica Haley's goal in the 14th minute was as nice a goal as you'll see. At the top of the 18-yard box, Tyler Lussi passed to Lauren Lazo around the corner of the 18, and Lazo flipped a pass down the endline to Haley, who headed it inside the opposite post.

• Princeton snapped a four-game winless streak with the victory.

• Saturday's tie was just the fourth in series history. The last against Columbia was in 2009.

• Princeton had its fifth OT game of the year Saturday. It's the most since 2009, when the team played in six OT games.

• Three goals are the most Princeton has scored without getting a win since a 4-4 tie with Colgate early last season. Prior to that, the last time Princeton scored three goals without getting a win against any opponent was in 1994, a 4-3 loss at Columbia. It was the first time that has happened at home since 1988, in a 4-3 loss to George Mason. It was the first time in program history that it happened in a home Ivy League game.

Melissa Downey scored goals in back-to-back games for the first time in her career. She has doubled her goal total entering the season, as she scored twice in 2011 as a freshman.

• Lauren Lazo, Princeton's leading returning scorer from last season, scored for the first time since Sept. 15 at Rutgers.

• Like Melissa Downey, Jessica Haley scored against both Lehigh and Columbia, and it was also the first time she's scored in back-to-back games.

Saturday at 7 p.m., Princeton will head to Harvard (8-3-2, 4-0) to cap a day of action between the two schools across several sports.
