Marathon Man - 2008 Feature On Bryce Chase

Bryce Chase is as much a part of the fabric of the Princeton men's lacrosse program as anyone has ever been. It's very likely that no single person has seen more Princeton lacrosse games than Chase.

This Saturday night, a large group of his teammates, fellow coaches, Princeton players and friends will gather to celebrate the contributions that Chase has made to the lacrosse program, dating back to when he first arrived as as freshman in 1959.

Chase will be honored at the annual gathering of the Friends of Princeton Lacrosse this Saturday at the Hyatt Regency. The day also includes two alumni games, one with alums against alums at 12:30 and then another at 1:30 between other alumni and the current team.

A 1958 Princeton High graduate, Bryce Chase came to Princeton after spending one year on active duty in the Marine Corps, before an additional 10 years in the Marine Reserves. He picked up lacrosse on the Princeton freshman team and became a three-year member of the varsity's first midfield.

He then attended law school at the University of Minnesota, returning to Princeton after graduation to start his practice. He would join the Princeton program again as a member of Art Robinson's coaching staff, and he would work with Mike Hanna, Jerry Schmidt and Bill Tierney as a volunteer assistant coach and now Chris Bates as a program volunteer

At one point, Chase saw 525 consecutive Princeton lacrosse games, a streak that ended in 2008 when he missed one game due to the flu. Along the way, he has been a mentor to a series of young assistant coaches and hundreds of young men on the lacrosse team.

Chase is known for his quick wit, his loyalty to the program, his no-nonsense approach, his off-color commentary and his devotion to the players and coaches.

In addition to the events this Saturday, Princeton will also play Virginia Oct. 12 in San Francisco.
