Westgarth '07 Headed to the Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. (1/13/13) - Princeton hockey alum Kevin Westgarth '07 has been traded to the Carolina Hurricanes it was announced today by the Hurricanes organization. The Los Angeles Kings traded Westgarth in exchange for Anthony Stewart, its 2013 fourth-round draft pick and a six-round selection in the 2004 draft.

"We were looking for a character, team guy who can play a gritty role for our team," Jim Rutherford, President and GM of the Hurricanes said on on the team Web site. "Kevin is a good addition to fill that spot."

Westgarth is beginning his seventh professional season. Last year he played in 25 games and had one goal, two assists and 39 penalty minutes. He played 90 career games with the Kings and collected one goal, four assists and 153 penalty minutes.

A native of Amherstburg, Ont., Westgarth signed with the Kings as a free against on March 16, 2007 after his senior season at Princeton.

In addition to his NHL experience, Westgarth played 224 AHL games with Manchester where he totaled 22 goals, 28 assists and 580 penalty minutes.

At Princeton, Westgarth played in 116 games, scoring 25 goals and adding 35 assists for 60 points. During the 2006-07 season he played alongside his older brother Brett. It was at Princeton where Westgarth met his wife, Megan (Cowher).

Carolina opens the season on Saturday, Jan. 19 when it travels to the Florida Panthers.
