Ave Scores First Career Goal in 2-1 Loss to No. 16 UMass Lowell
PRINCETON, N.J. (11/12/13) - No. 16 UMass Lowell went 2 for 4 on the power play to earn a 2-1 win over Princeton in men's hockey on Tuesday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Junior defender Aaron Ave scored his first career goal at 16:45 of the first period to give Princeton (1-6) the 1-0 lead. Classmate Aaron Kesselman had a shot get blocked in traffic before freshman Ryan Siiro collected it and sent it to the left point for Ave. Ave ripped a shot that made its way through traffic and past Doug Carr in net.
Senior Sean Bonar weathered the storm on the other end as the River Hawks outshot Princeton 16-8 in the first period.
Chris Maniccia evened the game with one minute left in the first period, converting on the only penalty of the first frame. Zack Kamrass started the breakout to Christian Folin down the left side. Folin circled behind the goal and sent it back up the blue line to Maniccia who fired for the goal.
The Tigers held its own during the final two periods but UMass Lowell (6-4) took the lead.
A penalty at the end of the second period gave the River Hawks the man advantage to start the third and they capitalized. Derek Arnold passed across the blue line to Josh Holmstom who sent the puck down low to Joseph Pendenza. Arnold cut to the middle while Holmstrom set a screen and Pendenza found Arnold for the goal.
Princeton pulled Bonar for the final 1:19 and had a number of bids but couldn't sneak the equalizer by Carr, who capped the night with 19 saves.
Bonar finished the night with 29 saves, with his best coming less than a minute into the second period on a Terrance Wallin one-on-one.
Princeton returns to ECAC action this weekend when it hosts Dartmouth and Harvard, Nov. 15 & 16. Both games are at 7 p.m.
