Men's Hockey Entertains National Semifinalist UMass Lowell Tuesday Night

PRINCETON, N.J. (11/11/13) - The Princeton men's hockey team entertains 2013 Frozen Four semifinalist UMass Lowell in a mid-week non-conference game on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at Hobey Baker Rink. No. 16 UMass Lowell is the first team outside of the ECAC that the Tigers have faced this season. Game time is at 7 p.m.

Princeton is 1-5 overall and looking to snap a five-game winless skid. The Tigers opened the season with a 3-2 overtime win versus Dartmouth at the Liberty Hockey Invitational and has gone 0-5 since. Junior Tucker Brockett is the team’s leading scorer with five points on two goals and three assists. Seniors Andrew Ammon and Jack Berger both have four points with Ammon scoring a team-high three goals and adding an assist, and Berger scoring two goals and two assists. Junior Tyler Maugeri, freshman Ben Foster and senior Andrew Calof have three points apiece. Netminders Sean Bonar and Colton Phinney have both seen time in goal. Bonar has a 1-3 record with an .888 save percentage and a 3.49 goals against average. Phinney is 0-2 with an .852 save percentage and a 4.87 GAA. 

No. 16 UMass Lowell is 5-4 overall and most recently had a four-game winning streak snapped at Northeastern. The River Hawks lost 4-3 to the Huskies last Saturday. The team opened the season with a newsworthy 2-1 loss to Sacred Heart before defeating UMass 5-2 the next day. Lowell dropped a pair to Quinnipiac and beat Michigan State, Michigan and UNH twice. The River Hawks average 2.67 goals per game and limit teams to 2.33 gpg. The power play has converted 18.8% (9/48) and the penalty kill has done its job at a rate of 81.8% (36/44). Three players lead the team in scoring with six points. Senior Joseph Pendenza and Adam Chapie have both scored four times and assisted twice. Junior Scott Wilson (PIT) has one goal and a team-best five helpers. Fifteen other players have one point or more. Sophomore Connor Hellebuyck (WPG) has started in goal for six games and is 3-3 with a .925 save percentage and a 2.21 GAA. Senior Doug Carr is 2-1 in his three games and has a .919 save percentage and a 2.30 GAA.

Lowell owns a 5-3 lead in the all-time series with Princeton since the team’s first met in 1988. The River Hawks won last year’s meeting 3-1, ending a three-game winning streak in the series for the Tigers. Princeton swept Lowell during a two-game series in Dec. 2010 with 5-2 and 7-2 wins. Senior Andrew Ammon leads all Tigers in scoring against Lowell with three goals. Seniors Andrew Calof and Kevin Ross have two assists apiece. Senior Sean Bonar has faced the team once and is 1-0 with 16 saves on 18 shots.
