PRINCETON, N.Y. (2/23/13) - The Yale men's hockey team scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the third period to earn a 4-3 win over Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Hobey Baker Rink.

The loss eliminates Princeton from a first-round bye in the ECAC Tournament. The Tigers can still get home ice in the first round but will need some help as they move to 9-14-4 overall and 7-10-3 in the ECAC.

It was a back-and-forth affair that saw one team answer after the other. A goal by Yale with less than two minutes play didn't leave Princeton enough time to respond, as Yale improves to 10-9-1 in the league and 14-10-3 overall.

Junior Jack Berger put the Tigers on the board scoring in the first six minutes of the game. It was a quick transition goal that had junior Andrew Calof centering to Berger at the defensive blue line. Berger dished off to senior Eric Meland on the right boards and he fired a shot that was saved by netminder Jeff Malcolm but Berger go to the rebound and put it away. Tonight's game marked Malcolm's first game back since he was injured in the Princeton/Yale game on Feb. 1.

Yale would capitalize on a single penalty twice, as they scored on the delay and then on the power play itself. Tommy Fallon banged the puck off the boards near the right corner and the puck ricocheted to center ice where Anthony Day was circling. Day picked up the puck and skate in on net and wristed in a goal at 8:09. Fallen would give Yale it's first lead scoring 36 seconds later on the power play.

Calof tied the game before the first intermission when he virtually went end-to-end on his own after getting the puck from junior Andrew Ammon deep in the defensive end.

A scoreless second period was highlighted by physical play of both teams. Princeton's Kevin Liss received a five-minute major and a game misconduct that led to Yale getting a five-minute power play midway through the period. The Tigers were able to kill it off and then themselves went on the power play after a hooking call on Fallen.

Princeton did capitalize on the next Yale penalty when Meland tallied his second goal of the year. Senior Michael Sdao had the puck at the point and sent it to Calof at the top of the circle. Calof pushed it back to the boards to senior Rob Kleebaum as he and Meland made their way to the slot. Kleebaum fired a shot that rebounded to Meland who buried the second chance.

Less than two minutes later however the Bulldogs answered. Clinton Bourbonais backhanded a pass to a streak Ryan Obuchowski and Obuschowski rifled a shot from inside the right circle over the glove of netminder Mike Condon.

With time winding down it looked as though the game was headed for overtime time until Carson Cooper's first goal of the season with 1:56 left on the clock. Fallon took a shot from the left point that made its way through traffic and Cooper was on the doorstep to shovel it into the right side before Condon could get there.

Condon finished the game with 23 saves and Malcolm stopped 17 for Yale as the Elis outshot the Tigers 28-20.

Princeton was 1 for 4 on the power play and Yale went 1 for 3.

The loss spoiled Senior Day for the Tigers as the team honored Condon, Sdao, Kleebaum, Meland, Will MacDonald and James Kerr during the first intermission.

The Tigers look to turn around a four-game losing skid when they travel to Dartmouth and Harvard in the final weekend of the regular season, March 1 & 2.
