Men's Hockey Skates to 2-2 Tie at RPI
TROY, N.Y. (11/30/12) - Senior Mike Condon made a season-high 37 saves as the Princeton men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Rensselaer on Friday, Nov. 30 at Houston Field House.
Condon was tested early and often, as the netminder had to make 13 saves in the first period. RPI had a near goal in the opening minute when a deflected puck started to slowly trickle towards the goal line before Condon dropped his stick behind it and pushed it wide of the goal. He continued his prowess with back-to-back stops on shots by Ryan Haggerty.
Senior defender Michael Sdao put the Tigers on the board first at 5:36 of the first period. Senior Eric Meland ripped a shot from the right point that hit the cross bar and was collected by senior Rob Kleebaum at the extended red. Kleebaum passed the puck back up the ice to Sdao at the left point and he rocketed a shot into the back of the net.
Kleebaum had a chance to make it 2-0 four minutes later when he intercepted a breakout pass and fired on goalie Jason Kasdorf who made the stop. Condon came up with a big stop on the other end, denying Mike Zalewski at the right post as the puck skidded across the paint.
Matt Tinordi evened the game at 2:20 of the second when he caught Condon being screened and fired a shot over his left shoulder. CJ Lee earned an assist on the goal.
The Engineers continued to hammer the cage as they had two power plays in the first 10 minutes of the second. The Tigers penalty kill extended its streak, killing off 11 straight.
Junior Andrew Calof gave Princeton the lead at 9:49 as the Tigers converted on the power play. Sdao crossed the blue line and fired a shot that made its way through traffic to the far pipe. Calof stuffed it in between Karsdorf and the right pipe. Sophomore Tyler Maugeri earned the secondary assist on the gaol.
A goal by Curtis Leonard with 3:51 remaining would force the overtime. Leonard slipped the puck five hole with Jacob Laliberte and Nick Bailen picking up the assists on the tying goal.
Condon made two saves and Karsdorf stopped three in the overtime session to end the game at 2-2.
Kasdorf finished the game with 19 saves as his team improves to 3-5-3 overall and 0-4-1 in the ECAC.
Princeton was 1 for 2 on the power play and 3 for 3 on the penalty kill. The Tigers are now 5-0-1 in the last six games at Houston Field House.
Princeton moves to 3-4-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the ECAC. The Tigers face No. 8 Union tomorrow, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. Quinnipiac defeated Union 4-0 this evening.
Quotes from RPI Coach Seth Appert (Post Game Press Conference)"That's a team that prides itself on playing hard. And I thought that Mike Condon was outstanding in net for them."
"A great equalizer is sometimes goaltending. And Condon was great. He was just great. Especially in the first period where it felt like we could get a 3-4 goal lead in the first period. Sometimes pucks don't go in and it's not always your fault, it's because the goalie is doing a great job and I thought that was the case tonight."
"Their D men did a good job of finding shot lanes. Sdao is a great player. He's a great hockey player. He's gonna play for a long time."
