Women's Tennis Begins Play at USTA Invite in New York

Four Tigers were in the draws at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Women's College Invitational when play began Friday, and the Princeton foursome turned in a successful first day at the three-day event.

Three of the four, including Sivan Krems, Dorothy Tang and Caroline Joyce, won their first-round singles matches and will play in quarterfinals Saturday. All four enjoyed first-round doubles wins, though only Cannon and Krems were able to gain a berth in a doubles semifinal Saturday.

"A" Singles, first round: Sivan Krems (P) def. Ksenija Tihomirova (FDU), 6-4, 6-3
"B" Singles, first round: Dorothy Tang (P) def. Maria Bernardez (Providence), 6-2, 6-1
"E" Singles, first round: Caroline Joyce (P) def. Lucy Nutting (Connecticut), 6-3, 6-1
"F" Singles, first round: Christina Harrington (Delaware) def. Joan Cannon (P), 6-3, 6-2

"A" Doubles, first round: Joan Cannon/Sivan Krems (P) def. Elizabeth Thoms/Ekaterina Tugarinova (Texas-Arlington), 8-4
"A" Doubles, quarterfinal: Cannon/Krems (P) def. Jocelyn Lu/Taylor Washington (Pittsburgh), 8-2
"B" Doubles, first round: Caroline Joyce/Dorothy Tang (P) def. Sarah Bowen/Carmen Pestano (Hofstra), 8-4
"B" Doubles, quarterfinal: June Lee/Amanda Lin (Harvard) def. Joyce/Tang (P), 9-7
