A pair of quick goals to open the second half were enough to spoil No. 9 Princeton’s hopes of handing undefeated No. 1 Maryland its first loss, as the Terrapins (13-0) defeated the Tigers (6-4) 3-1 loss Friday evening in College Park, Md.

The Princeton defense held a strong line deep into the first half, holding the top-ranked Terps scoreless for the first 33 minutes. With halftime looming UM took the ball into the Tiger circle and Jill Witmer picked up her own deflection off Anya Gersoff’s pads to send in the go-ahead goal and put Maryland up 1-0 at halftime.

UM carried over the momentum with a pair of immediate second half goals in the 37th and 38th minutes from Emma Rissinger and Witmer, respectively to put Princeton further on its heels.

The Tigers’ revived their chances of getting back in the game in the 49th minute off a Maddie Copeland goal.

Despite both sides tallying 10 shots apiece, Princeton was unable to find the back of the net and connect again before the end of regulation.

Princeton held a 5-2 penalty corner advantage, while Gersoff tallied six saves on the defensive end.

Princeton will look to rebound Sunday at Delaware in a 1 p.m. match in Newark, Del.
