No. 14 Menís Water Polo Goes Undefeated at Princeton Invite
The Princeton men’s water polo program has never lost to Iona and they were not about to start Sunday. After overcoming a slow start, the 14th-ranked Tigers responded with an 11-6 victory to improve to 18-0 all-time versus the Gaels. With the victory, the Tigers went undefeated, 3-0, to open the year at the Princeton Invitational.
Kayj Shannon captained the offensive effort with five goals, while Sam Butler added a team-high four steals along with a pair of assists and Thomas Nelson amassed his stats in twos: goals, assists and steals.
Iona took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter, before Princeton countered with a 3-1 run to go into halftime with a one-goal advantage, 4-3.
After the break, the Tigers completely dominated the third quarter. Princeton found the back of the net six times, while goalie Alex Gow tallied five saves to help his side build a 10-4 lead.
Gow (2-0) had 12 saves and a steal over the 32-minute match.
Princeton now hits the road for a 10-game road swing on both coasts beginning with George Washington, Johns Hopkins and Navy from Sept. 21-22.
