CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (3/2/13) - Junior Andrew Calof's 100th
career point couldn't have come at a better time. Calof scored the overtime
game-winner to defeat Harvard 2-1 and secure the No. 8 seed and home ice for
the ECAC Tournament first round series next weekend.
Princeton's opponent will be Cornell. The first game of the
best-of-three series will be Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. Saturday's game is at 7 p.m., as is Sunday's if necessary game.
With 1:09 remaining in overtime, the Tigers were faced with
three scenarios. A win would give them home ice, a tie would give them the No.
9 seed and a loss would make them No. 10. In a gutsy move, Princeton took the
risk and pulled netminder Mike Condon for the extra attacker and it paid off.
Junior Alec Rush and sent the puck across the blue line to
senior Michael Sdao. Sdao fired from the left point and Calof was on the right
post to pop it in with 37 seconds remaining in overtime.
The last time a junior scored 100 points was the year Calof
was born, in 1991, when Andre Faust tallied his 100th point.
Princeton took control from the opening puck drop but it was
Harvard that struck first with a short-handed goal at 11:24 of the first
period.
Nine seconds after Harvard's Brian Hart was called for
tripping, Harvard won the face off down low and Luke Greiner and Alex Fallstrom
skated in 2x1 and beat Condon for the goal.
The Tigers continued to dominate puck control and led 13-8
in shots at the end of one. The second period was no different as Princeton had
a 14-6 differential in shots, but this time it was the Tigers that lit the
lamp.
Sdao scored his eighth goal of the season ta
8:41 of the second period to knot the game at 1-1. Freshman Kyle Rankin won the
face off to the left of goaltender Raphael Girard and sophomore Tyler Maugeri
found it in the circle and sent it to an open Sdao at the left point. Sdao
one-timed and beat Girard gloveside.
Condon finished the game with 28 saves, with 15 coming in
the final 24 minutes of the game.
Girard made 45 saves in the losing effort for Harvard, who
drops to 9-17-3 overall and 6-14-2 in the league.
Princeton is now 10-14-5 overall and 8-10-4 in the league.
