PRINCETON, N.J. (10/20/12) - Sophomore Alex Wettermann headed home a rebound off a throw-in less than two minutes into the second overtime Saturday evening to help the Princeton men's soccer team beat Harvard 2-1 and stay unbeaten in the Ivy League.
The goal was the first in the sophomore's career. Wetterman didn't check into the game until the 71st minute, but would remain on the field for the remainder of the game. Freshman Josh Miller earned his first collegiate point as well, assisting on the goal.
After going scoreless for nearly 84 minutes, the game saw two goals in a span of 122 seconds in the game's waning moments.
Senior defender Mark Linnville hammered home a pass across the top of the 18-yard box from junior Dylan Bowman to get the Tigers on the board with a 1-0 lead. It marks Linnville's first goal of the season and third of his career as center back.
However, the euphoria didn't last long. Following a Seth MacMillan save on an attempt by Harvard's Matt Sheeleigh, Zack Wolfenzon collected the rebound and tied the game with just 4:06 to go in regulation.
Princeton (6-5-2, 2-0-2 Ivy) outshot Harvard 20-11 overall, though the Crimson (2-8-3, 0-3-1) had seven shots on goal to the Tigers' five. MacMillan finished with five saves for Princeton. The Tigers won the corner kick battle, taking an impressive 13 to Harvard's five.
Cornell dropped its first game of the year, a 2-0 game to Brown this evening, rearranging the Ivy League standings. Brown moves into first place with 10 points (3-0-1), Cornell is in second place with nine points (3-1-0), and Princeton is third with eight points (2-0-2). Brown and Princeton are the remaining unbeaten teams in the Ivy League.
Next Saturday's game, Princeton at Cornell, couldn't have more on the line. Game time is 3 p.m., in Ithaca, N.Y.
