VIDEO: Bob Surace, 2014 Co-Captains on Caraun Reid

Caraun Reid's magical journey at Princeton included All-America honors, the program's second-ever invitation to the Senior Bowl and, of course, the 2013 Ivy League championship. He has nothing left to prove on Saturdays.

Now it's time to look towards Sunday.

The co-captain of the 2013 Ivy League champion, Reid was selected in the fifth round by the Detroit Lions with the 158th pick of the NFL Draft. He is the 14th Princeton football player to be selected in the NFL Draft, and he is the first in the modern era (since the 1970 merger) to be selected within the first five rounds.

"I am thrilled for Caraun to get this opportunity," said head coach Bob Surace. "He has absolutely earned it. Besides his obvious physical gifts, he is a tireless worker and a dynamic leader. He helped us win the Ivy League championship as much off the field as he did on the field."

A 2012 and 2013 All-America, Reid led the league in sacks in Ivy games this season (5.5), and he finished second to teammate Jason Ray in tackles for loss in Ivy games (9.0). A three-time first-team All-Ivy League honoree, Reid overcame double- and triple-teams all season to become one of the league’s most disruptive forces on the line.

He ended his career in brilliant fashion, recording four tackles for loss and three sacks in the season finale at Dartmouth. He is the fourth player in Princeton history to be named to the All-Ivy first team three times, and the first since Matt Evans (1996-98). During his Princeton career, Reid recorded 41 tackles for loss, including 20.5 sacks.

A finalist for Ivy League Defensive of the Year honors, Reid is the first Princeton player to earn first-team All-America honors twice since all-time rushing leader Keith Elias, who was named All-America in both 1992 and 1993.

"I am truly delighted to see Caraun selected by the Detroit Lions in the 2014 NFL Draft," said associate head coach and defensive co-coordinator Steve Verbit, who coached both Reid and Catapano on the defensive line. "He is an exceptional young man and has worked tirelessly in the weight room, on the field and in the video room to make his dream a reality. Caraun is a diligent student of the game and is relentless in his desire to continually learn and grow as a player.

"His quick first step and the highly effective way that he uses his hands, along with his overall strength and size, will allow him to add another pass rush threat to the Lions defensive corps," he added.

Verbit has coached back-to-back NFL draft picks. In 2012, when Princeton improved by four games and stayed in the Ivy League race until the final weekend, he saw Reid line up opposite of Mike Catapano, a seventh-round selection of the Kansas City Chiefs. Catapano quickly became a special teams starter and rotation player on the playoff-bound Chiefs squad.

"He's a hard working player with a lot of athleticism and versatility," said Catapano. "He can play a couple of different spots along a defensive front, and can be utilized in both a 3-4 and 4-3 scheme. Teams will like how he moves for a big 300 pounder, as pass rushing DTs have increased value currently in the NFL.

"But in the end, all I want for Caraun is for him to land with a team that believes in his character as well as his abilities, like I found with the Kansas City Chiefs," he added.

"It is absolutely thrilling for all of us associated with Princeton Football to have two defensive linemen selected in the NFL draft in back to back years," Verbit said. "It will definitely be exciting to watch both Mike Catapano at Kansas City and Caraun at Detroit, chasing down NFL quarterbacks in 2014."
