A strong performance on both sides of the ball during the 2013 Spring Game provided a fitting conclusion to the 12-session spring practice season for the Princeton Football team. The Tigers also announced that Phillip Bhaya and Caraun Reid will serve as co-captains for the 2013 football season.
Princeton, following its biggest single-season turnaround in more than two decades, got ideal conditions on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium for its annual Spring Game. The players made the most of it from the start, with early highlights on both sides of the ball.
The first highlight came on a deep ball from sophomore quarterback Connor Michelsen down the right sideline to classmate Seth DeValve, who made a leaping grab against tight defense. It was one of several deep balls that ended up in highlight grabs from this dep corps of receivers; later in the game, both Matt Costello and Connor Kelley made leaping grabs in the end zone for memorable touchdowns.
One touchdown the offense would like to have back came from outside linebacker Jason Ray, who stepped in front of a pass and took it about 30 yards untouched for a score early in the Spring Game.
The defense had other highlights during the session, including several from players who seem to be excelling in new positions. Both Mike Zeuli, who moved from defensive back to linebacker, and Matt Arends, when went from cornerback to safety, were among the Tiger defenders who made tackle after tackle on a squad that has improved in that area every year under head coach Bob Surace.
Over the next couple of weeks, GoPrincetonTigers.com will cap its spring coverage of Princeton Football by announcing the incoming Class of 2017 and holding its 11th annual Spring Chat with Surace.
