Despite taking a first inning lead and tallying 12 hits, the Princeton baseball team was unable to overcome scoring bursts by No. 3 Virginia and dropped a 14-4 decision Thursday in Charlottesville, Va.

The Tigers (3-9) opened the day scheduled to play Maine in Annapolis, Md., but travel complications for the Black Bears forced the game to be cancelled and sent the Tigers to Virginia.

Three Princeton players recorded multi-hit outings, led by Alec Keller’s 3-for-4 day with two runs and an RBI. Billy Arendt went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Jonathan York was a perfect 2-for-2 with a run.

Keller and Arendt opened the game with back-to-back doubles and Princeton took a quick 1-0 lead.

The Cavaliers responded with nine runs between the first and third innings, putting distance between them and the Tigers.

Down 9-1, Princeton loaded the bases with an out and a Will Davis infield fly would send home the Tigers’ second run of the game.

Keller would contribute to Princeton’s final pair of runs in the seventh with an RBI triple and coming home on Arendt’s sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Sammy Gonzales-Luna made his Princeton debut as a pinch hitter.

The Tigers will now head to Navy for a four-game series from Mar. 22-23 in Annapolis, Md.
