The Princeton wrestling team earned its first victory over Binghamton and topped its win total through all of last season with a 27-5 road victory Saturday. The Tigers are now 3-0, with all three victories coming against fellow EIWA programs.

Princeton won nine of 10 matches during the showdown, including seven victories by underclassmen. The sophomore duo of Scott Gibbons and Abe Ayala opened the day with decisions, including a 3-2 win for Ayala at 197.

Binghamton heavyweight Tyler Deuel earned a technical fall to get the Bearcats back within one point, but Princeton had all the answers the rest of the match. Senior Garrett Frey, wrestling in his first dual match since the 2011-12 season, took out David White 8-1 at 125, and freshman Jordan Laster scored the only takedown in a 3-1 win at 133.

Junior Adam Krop returned from the injury he suffered at the Navy Invitational and gutted out a 4-3 win at 141. Krop had an early takedown, but Dylan Caruana was able to score a takedown of his own and add an escape to open a lead. Krop added an escape in the third and had more than enough riding time to be assured another point, meaning Caruana needed a late takedown to win the match. The two scrambled late, which was just fine for the the nationally ranked Krop, who stayed neutral to keep the 4-3 win.

Sophomore Max Rogers, who moved from 125 to 149 this season, made his 2013-14 debut with a 5-3 win over Dylan Cohen, and freshman Matthew Gancayco carried the momentum of a takedown seconds into his 157-pound match to a 6-1 victory.

Sophomore Judd Ziegler (6-0) and freshman Brett Harner finished the dominant performance with wins, clinching the 27-5 team win and sending Princeton into the Dec. 14 matchup against Rutgers with plenty of momentum.

"This team start has been satisfying and it is encouraging to see all the work we are putting in in the room pay off," Krop said. "The team is growing in confidence and you really can see it in each individual match. Guys are controlling the mat and looking to score points in every situation."

That match will be the main event during a "Celebration of New Jersey Wrestling," a day which will include a tribute to all returning New Jersey state champions. The match, which will be held at Jadwin Gym, will also include a recognition to all high school teams in attendance, and it will follow a clinic but former New Jersey and NCAA champions Joe Dubuque and Frank Molinaro.

"We are all looking forward to the Rutgers dual and are excited at the opportunity to take on a top-notch program in front of a home crowd in Jadwin," Krop said. "This match will be a gauge to see just how good we really are. This could be a pivotal moment for the program and provide us with the momentum we need heading into Midlands. We have a big opportunity next Saturday and what better way to make a statement as a program then in front of a big home crowd at Jadwin Gym."

Any former state champions who would like to be involved in the event can register here.
