Women Stay Undefeated, Men Remain in Contention at Ivy Fencing Meet

Princeton's women's fencing team won all four of its matches Saturday at Harvard to begin the Ivy League round-robin, and the men's team was one bout victory from finishing the first day undefeated as well.

The women posted strong victories over Cornell, Brown, Penn and Yale, never losing more than six of the 27 bouts in those matches. Senior Eliza Stone had the best day of an excellent start for the Tigers as the saberist finished 10-0 in her bouts.

The men had a 16-11 win over Brown and a 19-8 win over Yale, but a 14-13 loss to Penn hurt the Tigers' chances of repeating as Ivy League champions. Penn racked up eight victories out of nine possible bouts in the saber, helping their advantage.

In the standings, Princeton and Columbia are both 4-0, and that deadlock will be settled right away Sunday when both Tiger teams take on the Lions at 10 a.m. A win there would clinch a share of the Ivy title, and a win there plus a victory in the finale over Harvard at 11:30 a.m. would make the Tigers outright Ivy champions. The women are seeking their fourth straight Ivy title, which would be a first in program history and a first in the Ivy League since Penn in the 1980s.

The men have a tougher road, but can still win a share of the Ivy title by winning out Sunday. To do so, they'll have to knock off the two teams in front of them, Columbia (3-1) and Harvard (2-0).
