Courtesy: Princeton Athletic CommunicationsFloTrack has established a committee to put together the FloAwards Watchlist, cross country's version of the Heisman Watch. The list includes the top three runners, top three rookies, top three teams and a darkhorse to watch out for.
Princeton Sam Pons was ranked the No. 3 freshman on the list last week when he was the first rookie across the line at the Notre Dame Invitational, finishing 25th. An off week for Pons makes him the darkhorse for the week.
As a team the men are just outside the top three in the nation, receiving votes by the committee.
Senior Donn Cabral was named the HepsTrack Men's Athlete of the Week in week five. Cabral finished fourth at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational with a time of 23:31. He led the Tigers to a fourth-place finish as a team, ahead of numerous nationally-ranked squads. Freshman Eddie Owens was named the Men's Rookie of the Week. Owens was the seventh freshman across the line at Wisconsin with a time of 24:42 to finish 77th overall.
Senior Alex Banfich was named the HepsTrack co-Female Athlete of the Week in week five. She placed fourth at the Wisconsin Invitational with a time of 20:10.1
David Nightingale '08, representing the New York Athletic Club, won the men’s 8k at the 22nd Annual Mayor’s Cup in Boston’s Franklin Park with a time of 23:46. Nightingale had this to say after the race: "There were about nine or ten of us in a pack for the first three miles. We picked it up a little bit from three to four. It wasn't until the last 400 meters that I was able to get a lead."
The Boston Athletic Association wrote: The well-timed kick of Nightingale put him two seconds ahead of Jeff Schirmer Steve Hallinan and Harbert Okuti, who all finished in 23:48. It also earned him $900. Nightingale’s isn’t the only trophy the NYAC will be bringing back to the Big Apple, as he and Gian-Paul Caccia (eighth), Matthew Forys (tenth), Phillips (11th), and Daniel Lewis (13th) combined to win the Team Competition with 43 points. Host Boston Athletic Association was second with a score of 98, and New Balance Boston placed third with 108.
Nightingale wasn’t the only Ivy League graduate to finish in the top 10. On the women’s side, Princetonian Emily Kroshus '04 was eighth. In related news, Emily's younger brother Tom is a freshman on the Princeton men's hockey team.
