The men's lightweight rowing team held its annual Fall Class Day race on the final Saturday before Thanksgiving under mostly sunny skies and blustery conditions on Lake Carnegie. This is the third year that the Class Day title was conducted in the three-race (4-miler, 2-miler, 1-miler) around the buoy format.

The senior/frosh combination 8+, led by lightweight captain Winfield Tinsman III, clinched the title over the Class of '16 Junior 8+ by just 3 seconds after almost 38 minutes of rowing.

The first leg of the regatta was a four-mile piece which started and finished at the Harrison Bridge with a 180-turn at the finish line of the Bud Smith race course.

The Junior 8+ (coxswain Ilana Polster, stroke Will Downing, Fabrizio Filho, Casey Ward, Jason Elefant, Sean McIntee, Bo Peard, Andrew Frazier, and Matt Drabick) took the lead in the competition with a narrow 1.4-second margin over the Senior/Frosh 8+ (23:59.86 vs. 24:01.24)

"With the strength of the headwind in the first half of the piece, it was important to get into a good groove early and have some more to give when the conditions came into our favor," said James Kwan '14, stroke of the Senior/Frosh 8+.

The second leg of Class Day is a two-mile piece conducted over the famous Stuyvesant Pell '53 small-boats racecourse, "stone bridge to stone bridge" with a 180-turn "at the top of the island." In yet another incredible result for the distance being contested, the Junior 8+ was the fastest of the four boats once again, this time by just one-tenth of one second over the Senior/Frosh 8+.

"In the two-miler, we wanted to be more aggressive and bring the cadence up a bit," said Downing, stroke of the Junior 8+.

"We knew it was close after the first piece, so we were doing everything we could to get a lead going into the last leg," Polster added.

With the top two boats separated by just 1.5 seconds after more than 34 minutes of rowing, the crews lined up for the final leg, a 1-mile piece starting at the stone bridge, a 180-degree turn around the "small turn buoy," and an all-out sprint back to the stone bridge, for all the marbles. In the result that ended up mattering most, the Senior/Frosh 8+ claimed the third leg by 4.6 seconds, overtaking the Junior 8's previous margin, and winning the Fall Class Day title by just 3.15 seconds.

"This was a great way to end the Fall for the team and my class had a ton of fun bonding with some strong freshmen on our squad," Tinsman said afterwards.
