HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/21/14) - A goal three minutes into the third period proved to be the difference maker as Colgate defeats Princeton 1-0 on Friday, Feb. 21 at Starr Rink.
Hannah Rastrick's first goal of the season came at an opportune time, just 2:54 into the third period. Melissa Kueber and Taylor Volpe earned the assists on the would-be game-winning goal.
A Colgate (10-21-2, 7-14 ECAC) penalty at 16:16 gave Princeton (13-11-4, 9-9-3 ECAC) an opportunity to knot the game up, but the Raiders kept the Tigers at bay. Princeton tried again, using an extra skater with netminder Kimberly Newell on the bench for the final 1:37. Ashlynne Rando stopped both of Princeton's shots on goal to keep the clean sheet with 20 saves. Newell also made 20 saves in the game.
Princeton has locked in as the No. 6 seed in the ECAC Tournament. If the Tigers win tomorrow they'll have 23 points, still two back from St. Lawrence. If the Tigers lose and Yale wins the teams will be tied for sixth place with 21 points. WIth the team's splitting the season series, the tie-breaker would go to the team with more wins, and that would be the Tigers who would have 10 to Yale's seven.
Princeton will face either Clarkson, Harvard or Cornell in the ECAC Quarterfinals, determined after the outcomes of tomorrow's games.
