The Princeton men's lightweights are honored following their victory at the 2013 Head of the Charles.

HEAD OF THE CHARLES RESULTS

Men's lightweight head coach Marty Crotty has sent out plenty of young rowers over the last two years, and those experiences helped Princeton to a championship at the 49th annual Head of the Charles, held Sunday in Boston.

The Princeton lightweight 'A' boat was one of eight Tiger crews that competed in one of the most prestigious rowing events of the year, and it was the one that posted the biggest highlight. Princeton won the event in 15:03.554, more than eight seconds faster than reigning national champion Harvard, which finished second. Yale, which took third, finished more than 18 seconds behind the Tigers.

"It was a great team win," head coach Marty Crotty said. "It's great to win the title with the first boat. We have been working hard as a team, and I think that is indicated by the second boat as well. The second boat had a tough piece early, but they closed really well and have a lot to look forward to at the Princeton Chase next week.

"It's good to have these days where hard work pays off," Crotty added. "Also, I'm really happy that [assistant coach] Mike Lombardi gets to go out with a win like this. He has been a huge part of the development of this team."

Lombardi has served as Crotty's assistant for three seasons, but he is transitioning into a new profession following the Charles. Both Crotty and Lombardi have worked tirelessly on the development of a young roster, and the fruits of that labor was seen Sunday. The varsity eight, which didn't have a single senior in the boat, had a majority of underclassmen in the boat. Freshman coxswain Grant Golub won the Head of the Charles for the second straight year, as he coxed his high school four to a 2012 title.

The Tiger lightweights had two top-ten boats in the field, as the 'B' boat finished ninth overall in 15:36.337, which was only a little more than five seconds from a top-five finish. The Princeton 'B' boat defeated a handful of 'A' boats, including Ivy rivals Dartmouth and Penn.

The women's lightweight eight finished seventh in its championship eight competition in a time of 9:58.624. The lightweight women also sent a four into the field, and it finished 14th in 21:42.326.

The reigning Ivy League champion women's open squad had a pair of Top 20 finishers in the women's championship eights. The Princeton 'A' boat finished 12th in 17:14.288, while the 'B' boat took 18th in 17:39.173. The 'A' boat finished in the Top 10 of collegiate boats, while the 'B' boat defeated every other 'B' boat in the collegiate field except for Virginia.

In the men's championship eights, the Princeton 'A' boat finished 13th in 15:10.505, while the 'B' boat finished 26th in 15:58.263. Like the open women, the Tiger heavies posted a Top-10 finish in the collegiate field.

Princeton will return to the water next weekend for a pair of regattas, including its own Princeton Chase on Oct. 27. Selected Princeton boats will also head to Philadelphia for the Head of the Schuylkill.
