Gary Walters Conferred Emeritus Director Of Athletics Status

Gary Walters, the Ford Family Director of Athletics at Princeton University, has been conferred the title of Emeritus Director of Athletics by University President Christopher L. Eisgruber.

The title was then approved unanimously by the Board of Trustees.

“This is a great honor,” Walters said. “I am very humbled by what President Eisgruber and the Board of Trustees have chosen to do on my behalf.”

Walters will be stepping aside from his position on June 30, at which point he will have been Princeton’s athletic director for exactly 20 years.

In his tenure, Princeton teams have won 220 Ivy League championships, a total 74 more than the next-best total and 121 more than the third best. Princeton has also won 46 individual or team national championships during his time as Director of Athletics.

Walters is a 1967 graduate of Princeton, and he was a point guard on the basketball team during one of the most glorious runs in program history, including the 1965 NCAA Final Four and 1967 East Regional. As a basketball player he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He was also an assistant coach with the men’s basketball team when it won the 1975 NIT championship.

In addition to the on-field success, Walters has also had a never-wavering commitment to integrity and the value of athletics as a co-curricular part of the overall experience of the student-athletes, a concept that he has termed “Education Through Athletics.”

Mollie Marcoux ’91, a former hockey and soccer player at Princeton, will be taking over for Walters as Princeton’s fifth Director of Athletics.
