In a rowing rivalry that has grown over more than 100 years, the Princeton and Navy heavyweights raced boats named after a memorable Olympic Trial showdown. While that 1952 race belonged to Navy, the fourth-ranked Tigers won Saturday morning's competition by less than two seconds on the Severn River.

That victory highlighted a day of highly competitive racing for both Princeton and 12th-ranked Navy, including a 2V showdown that was decided by only .2 of a second. Though Princeton did have a pair of scrimmage wins against Georgetown and Syracuse last weekend, it was a positive start to the official racing season.

"It's college racing and you can never really be satisfied with your current speed," senior Dave Mackasey said. "I think we've set ourselves up nicely for a strong season, but we'll have to keep working hard everyday to gain more speed if we want to reach our goals for the season."

The varsity eight showdown matched boats named after 1952 Olympic Trials competitors. Princeton, in the 1952, pulled off an exciting win in 6:06.2, while Navy, in "The Great Eight," finished in 6:07.6.

"Navy's a strong crew and put up a great fight so were excited to bring home the Princeton Navy Cup again this season," Mackasey said. "We got out to a quick clean start and were able to maintain our lead, something we set out to do and have been working hard on at practice this spring. We're starting to come together as a crew and should continue to do so as we gear up for Penn and Columbia next weekend in Philadelphia."

While Mackasey was one of several upperclassmen who have experienced such historic rivalries, freshman Tom George is getting his first experiences in the varsity eight rivalries.

"Tom has integrated nicely with our boat," Mackasey said. "He's an experienced racer who's very capable of competing at the varsity level. The freshmen class as a whole has been very impressive so far, both on the water and through our winter training. They have been putting pressure on each other and on the older guys to perform day in and day out, which has helped our crew as a whole to gain speed."

While the Navy-Princeton rivalry has been going on since 1913, there is no collegiate racing trophy older than the Childs Cup, which will be raced for next Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River. Princeton leads the all-time series with 46 wins, while Penn is second with 44 and Columbia has 12.
