The fourth-ranked Princeton heavyweights will officially kick off their 2014 season this weekend in Annapolis, Md., as they take on the 12th-ranked Midshipmen for the Navy-Princeton Cup.

Princeton got out on the water last weekend, though it was technically deemed a scrimmage, and earned wins over EARC rivals Georgetown and Syracuse. The varsity eight topped Syracuse by nearly six seconds, while the second varsity defeated the Orange by more than 15 seconds. Both wins came in brutal conditions on Lake Carnegie, and the Tigers should be able to enjoy much better conditions on the Severn River Saturday morning.

Princeton remained fourth in this week’s national poll, though there was movement both above and below the Tigers. Northeastern, previously No. 2, dropped eight spots following a loss at Penn; Washington, which was No. 6 in the preseason, moved up three spots following its own Class Day regatta.

In other words, it’s way too early to know where any of these boats stand among each other.

Princeton will get a good test this Saturday when it heads out for its first of three consecutive road regattas. More than 100 years after the first meeting between the two tradition-rich programs, Princeton and No. 12 Navy will vie for the Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup on the Severn River (7:20 am).

This will be the first race of the season for the Midshipmen, who fell to Princeton by 3.3 seconds in their regular season meeting last year.
