Men's Track Takes Four Wins at Gotham Cup

NEW YORK (1/10/14) - Facing club competitors and professionals at the New York City Gotham Cup, the Princeton men's track & field team won an impressive four events at The Armory on Friday night,

Senior Tom Hopkins was a double winner in both the 500 and long jump. He clocked a 1:02.57 in the 500, the best time of the 65 competitors. He later won the long jump with a PR of 7.66 (25-1.75), as the only jumper to reach 25 feet. Hopkins has reached a PR in both times he has competed in the long jump this season, first clearing 7.61 and now. 7.66 after entering the season with a best of 7.55.

Seniors Michael Williams and Chris Bendtsen went 1-2 in the mile. Williams ran a 4:10.51 and Bendtsen a 4:15.12. Classmate George Galasso wasn't far behind placing seventh out of 60 with a PR of 4:17.87.

Another 1-2 punch came in the 3,000 from seniors Alejandro Arroyo Yamin and Tyler Udland. Arroyo Yamin won the event with a time of 8:21.69 and Udland was the runner-up at 8:21.81. Junior Matt McDonald was fourth at 8:32.07, followed by sophomore Michael Sublette seventh at 8:42.43 and freshman Jack Leahey 10th at 8:53.42.

Sophomore Jamie Fehrnstrom was fourth in the 800 at 1:58.75, the second-best collegiate time in the race.

Sophomore Greg Caldwell made the finals of the 60-meter hurdles and finished eighth in the final at 8.41 out of 47 hurdles.

Other top finishes on the track included freshman Bryant Switzer 12th in the 400 at 49.88, frshman Peter Ray Mennin ninth in the 500 at 1:05.10, freshman William Paulson ninth in the 1000 at 2:31.42 and an 8-9-11 performance by senior Shane Molidor, sophomore Jake Scinto and junior Stephen Soerens in the long jump.

In the relays, the DMR was second at 10:20.25.

Senior Omar Jarrett was fourth in the high jump and second as a collegiate. He cleared 1.99 (6-6.25)

Freshman Benjamin Gaylord was the top collegiate in the pole vault and was third overall reaching a height of 4.75 (15-7).

A handful of throwers will compete on Saturday at the Monmouth. The next team event will be the Tiger Open on Jan. 25 at Jadwin Gym after semester finals.
