Final 2012-13 Learfield Cup Directors' Cup Standings

TigerBlog On The Directors' Cup

An academic year that featured four NCAA championships and 13 league championships has resulted in yet another high finish the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings for Princeton Athletics.

With the end of the College World Series, the 2012-13 year in college athletics is now complete. Princeton, improving four spots from a year earlier, finished 35th overall in Division I.

"While we are proud of our nationally competitive performance on the field of play, we are even prouder of our coaches and student-athletes who understand that the concept of 'Education Through Athletics' is the co-curricular experience that is most meaningful," said Ford Family Director of Athletics Gary Walters. "Athletics is the sweatiest of the liberal arts at Princeton."

Stanford won the Directors' Cup for the 19th straight time, after not winning in the first year it was awarded. The Directors' Cup, presented by the National Assocation of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, is determined by points awarded based on a school's finish in NCAA championship competition.

As for Princeton, it has now been the highest finishing Ivy League school for the 17th time in 20 years. Princeton was also the only non-BCS school in the top 42 and the only FCS school in the top 56.

Princeton has never finished lower than 63rd and has only been out of the Top 50 three times in 20 years.

Aside from those three, Princeton has never below 47th, and Princeton has been in the Top 40 15 times in 20 years. There have been five Top 30 finishes, with an all-time best of 21st in 2001-02.

Princeton picked up spring points in women's open rowing, women's lacrosse, men's and women's track and field, women's water polo and men's golf. Princeton won NCAA championships this past academic year in both field hockey and men's and women's combined fencing.

Princeton finished within a point of Auburn and North Carolina State. The five schools directly behind Princeton were Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Louisville, Syracuse and Northwestern.
