COLLEGE PARK, Md. (4/10/13) - A second-half surge by the 16th-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team fell short Wednesday night, as the top-ranked Maryland Terrapins used a strong start to remain undefeated with a 15-9 victory over the Tigers.

Junior Caroline Franke made a career-high 13 saves in goal for the Tigers and thwarted two of the Terrapins’ three free-position attempts. Sophomore Erin McMunn had a four-point game with two goals and two assists but more impressively had nine draw controls. It is the most draw controls in a game since Abigail Gutstein had nine against West Chester in 1995. Gutstein holds the record of 10.

Senior Sam Ellis and junior Sarah Lloyd both scored twice and freshman Alexandra Bruno had a goal and an assist.

Maryland (15-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, prompting Princeton (7-4) to call a timeout.

McMunn put Princeton on the scoreboard at 19:03 when she dodged on the left side to the goal.

The Tigers would go cold for the next 6:30 as Maryland rattled off three more goals to take a 7-1 edge.

McMunn found a cutting Bruno to make it 7-2 and end the drought at 12:32.

Maryland’s leading scorer Alex Aust scored a free-position goal at 8:02 before Schwarzmann  capped off the first half with a goal in the final minute as the Terps took an 9-2 lead into the locker room.

Aust tallied the first goal of the second half but the Terrapins would go quiet for the next 6:42 as the Tigers mounted a comeback.

Princeton rattled off four straight goals in the next 4:03 to cut its deficit to just four, 10-6 at 18:33. Lloyd and Ellis both converted on free-position attempts, senior Jaci Gassaway scored an unassisted goal off the bench and junior Mary-Kate Sivilli scored on a feed from McMinn.

Beth Glaros halted the Tigers’ run as she scored twice around McMunn’s second goal to put Maryland back up by five, 12-7.

Schwarzmann and Ellis traded goals 20 seconds apart, and then the nets stilled as neither team could get by the opposing defense for more than 10 minutes.

Halle Majorana broke the scoreless stretch with 4:45 remaining and Aust chipped in another exactly one minute later.

Llloyd tallied the final goal of the game at 2:09.

Aust had a seven-point game with three goals and four assists. Majorana added three goals and one assist, while Schwarzmann and Glaros each had a hat trick. Kasey Howard made six saves in net.

Maryland outshot Princeton 36-19 in the game. The Tigers were 3 for 3 on eight-meter attempts and won 15 draws to Maryland’s 11.

The Tigers host Harvard on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m., as Princeton continues its Ivy League journey.
