Coming off its sweep of the annual Syracuse-Georgetown scrimmage, the fifth-ranked Princeton heavyweights will take on No. 10 Navy Saturday morning for the first regular season dual between the two programs since March 31, 2007. It will be the lone home race on Lake Carnegie, following a weekend when all four Princeton teams were successful at home.

“The whole team was very pleased to start the season with wins over Syracuse and Georgetown last weekend,” said junior William Gillis of last weekend's sweep of both teams in the season-opening scrimmage. “They are two tough EARC opponents and we always look forward to racing them at the start of our season. I was really excited to see the entire squad harness the work we did indoors this winter and execute aggressive pieces all the way down the course.

"We are proud of the result from the weekend, but our attention and focus remain on developing each week in preparation for the championship season in May and June," Gillis added. "It is still early, and all of our boats are committed to keep pushing one another to find additional speed.”

Princeton will get a good test this weekend against Navy, especially since both were picked as Top 10 teams in the first USRowing collegiate poll released this week (see link above). This will be the first race of the season for Navy, which finished one spot behind Princeton in the 2012 Eastern Sprints grand final.

“This Navy race is a real treat for us,” senior Brian Wettach said. “We get the chance to line up against these guys head-to-head for the first time in my career here. This race is different from our traditional cup races because its new to us and it comes early in the season, both of which make it exciting and unpredictable.

“They are tough guys, they race hard, and we know it,” Wettach added. “It’s going to take a serious effort to come away with the result we want on race day.”

"We are all very excited for the opportunity to race Navy on Saturday," Gillis said. "We have a tremendous amount of respect for their guys as individuals and for their program as a whole. It will be a privilege to be on the water as we bring back this tradition." Racing will begin at 9 am on Lake Carnegie with the fourth varsity, and will continue with races every 20 minutes. The varsity eight showdown will be held at 10 am.

"After five years without a Princeton-Navy dual on our schedule, it is great to have the race back," head coach Greg Hughes said. "Navy crews are always tough and gutsy, and some of the most hard-fought races in our history have been with Navy. There is a long history to this race and the team is very excited to have the chance to be a part of that history once again."
