SEASON PREVIEW (with video)

Racing for a Cup named after one of the legendary coaches in the program's proud history, the Princeton men's lightweights opened their 2013 season in style Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie. The Tigers retained the Joseph Murtaugh Cup and won three of five races, including the freshman debut, in the first event of the Princeton Rowing season.

The Princeton lightweights retained the Murtaugh Cup by more than nine seconds, taking the last race of the morning in 6:26.2. Navy finished in 6:35.4.

The 2V grabbed a win by nearly 12 seconds (6:22.4), while the freshman eight earned a hard-fought win in 6:27.2 for its first collegiate race. Navy finished second in the freshman eight in 6:30.9.

"It was a good day for our team today," head coach Marty Crotty said. "The Murtaugh Cup is a special race for us because of what Joe means to this boathouse and the standards that his teams achieved. I was happy to see a lot of guys on our team today win their first race in a Princeton uniform against some tough competition in Navy and in some pretty tough conditions. Hopefully they never forget today."

Princeton will remain home next weekend and take on Georgetown for the Fosburgh Cup. The showdown will be part of a full weekend of home racing for Princeton. The third-ranked open women and the men's heavyweights will also compete Saturday, while the women's lightweights will take on Wisconsin in a battle of the last two Eastern champions Sunday morning.
