Bintliff, Callahan Have Perfect Days, Though Tigers Fall In Ivy Pair

Perfect days for senior co-captain Zach Bintliff and junior Ryan Callahan were the highlights for the Princeton wrestling team, which dropped a pair of Ivy League dual matches during the team’s Alumni Weekend Saturday at Dillon Gym.

The day started with far more promise, as Princeton raced out to a 9-3 lead through the first four matches against Brown. The Bears took five of the final six to earn a 20-12 win, and Harvard used its pair of nationally ranked wrestlers to build a commanding early lead in a 27-6 win in the afternoon.

Bintliff, a two-time EIWA placewinner for Princeton, set a career high with his 18th victory of the season Saturday. After a 7-3 win over Grant Overcashier in the morning, he earned a hard-fought 7-5 victory over Harvard’s Todd Preston, which got Princeton on the board against the Crimson.

Callahan had the most impressive win of the day, and it came during the afternoon showdown against Harvard. He defeated Brown’s Richard McDonald 8-4 during the morning, and he came back in the afternoon for a 7-3 win over Harvard’s Cameron Croy, who has 21 wins on the season. Croy was a placewinner at the 2012 EIWA Championships and one of the most experienced wrestlers in the Crimson lineup.

The Tigers also got morning victories from senior Andrew Hirai, a 7-5 winner at 133, and freshman Kevin Moylan, a 7-3 winner at 141. It was Hirai’s win that started a three-match Princeton run, which concluded with Bintliff’s first win of the day. At that point, the Tigers held a 9-3 lead, but Callahan would be the only Princeton wrestler to earn a win the rest of the match.

The Crimson was able to get ahead of Princeton in the lower weights, including an 8-0 major from Steven Keith, who is ranked 13th at 141. Crimson senior Walter Peppelman, a two-time All-America, scored a technical fall at 157 over Princeton’s Brandon Rolnick, who is making his return to the mat after battling several injuries throughout his career.

Princeton will return to the road next Friday night for a 7 pm showdown at Columbia. The Tigers’ home finale will be Feb. 24 against Boston University (1 pm), and then the focus will turn to the EIWA Championships, held Mar. 8-9 at Rutgers.
