A Win on the Road for Men's Hockey as Tigers defeat Colgate 4-2

HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/8/13) - A two-goal second period gave Princeton the lead as the men's hockey team defeated Colgate 4-2 on Friday, Feb. 8 at Starr Rink. With the win the Tigers post a season sweep of the Raiders, after winning 4-0 in November.

Making the win more impressive was the fact that Princeton played with 16 skaters. Eight are back in Princeton injured. Junior Will Ford dressed as the back-up goalie for the first time in his career, in place of an ill Sean Bonar.

Senior Mike Condon earned the first star of the game after making 36 saves for the Tigers, including 17 in the first period when Princeton was outshot 18-8. Condon is now 4-0 all-time against Colgate.

The Tigers improve to 8-10-4 overall and 6-6-3 in ECAC Hockey and move into fifth place in the league standings, along with Clarkson and Rensselaer.

Freshman Mike Ambrosia put Princeton on the scoreboard at 7:06 of the first when junior Andrew Calof dropped the puck off in the slot.

Colgate's Joe Wilson evened the game right before the close of the first period scoring on the doorstep on a feed from Jeremy Price behind the cage.

Junior Alec Rush regained the lead for Princeton at 6:09 of the second period. Rush scored on a rocket from the right point that sailed past netminder Spencer Finney. The goal is Rush's second of the season.

Junior captain Jack Berger snapped his scoreless streak with a power-play goal at 14:19. It makes his first goal in 24 games. Juniors Will MacDonald and sophomore Aaron Ave were credited with the assists.

Thomas Larkin cut the Raiders' deficit to one early in the third with help from Mike Borkowski and John Lidgett. The goal came at 1:38, just after a penalty on Darcy Murphy expired.

Another career first came for rookie Jonathan Liau as he scored his first goal at 7:10 to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead. Senior Rob Kleebaum put the puck in play from the left boards and Liau put away a rebound by junior Andrew Ammon.

Finney skated to the bench with 1:04 remaining but the Raiders couldn't get anything past the Tiger defense. Condon stopped one shot and the Tigers blocked three in the final minute of play.

Finney ended the game with 22 stops as Colgate falls to 13-10-4 overall and 5-7-3 in the league.

Princeton picked up a number of penalties but its penalty-killing unit was on fire. The Tigers limited Colgate to just eight shots during 12:27 minutes. Princeton was 7 for 7 on the penalty kill and 1 for 5 on the power play.

Princeton will take on Cornell tomorrow night, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. Quinnipiac defeated Cornell 4-1 this evening at Lynah Rink.
