CLASS OF 1999 CUP HISTORY l NATIONAL POLL

For years, Wisconsin has been the team that stood in the way of the Princeton women’s lightweights at Eastern Sprints. That made the 2011 EAWRC championship all the sweeter, knowing Wisconsin was in the rearview mirror.

Over the last two years, Stanford has made a huge jump in the national field. The Cardinal matched up with Princeton in a historic duel for the 2011 national championship, with Stanford coming away with a thrilling victory.

Teams like Georgetown and Bucknell continue to get stronger and challenge Princeton, and both figure to factor at the May 13 EAWRC Championships.

But make no mistake. Princeton’s top, and most historic, rival remains Radcliffe. And that’s who is coming to Bud Smith Memorial Race Course on Lake Carnegie this weekend.

For the fifteenth time, Princeton and Radcliffe will compete in the regular season. Princeton holds a 12-2 edge in The Class of 1999 Cup series, and it has won each of the last two meetings. The Tigers have won all six meetings on Lake Carnegie, including the 2010 race by a 2.3-second margin.

But this may be the biggest home challenge for Princeton, which is ranked below Radcliffe in the latest USRowing poll. The Crimson is currently fourth, while Princeton, coming off a win over No. 6 Georgetown last weekend, is fifth.

A win Saturday (11:25 start; 11:40 V8) could provide a huge lift for the Tigers when they try to defend their Eastern championship.
