Courtesy: Princeton Athletic CommunicationsPROVIDENCE (3/10/11) - Junior Jaci Gassaway and senior Cassie Pyle combined for 10 goals as the No. 14-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team posted a demanding 18-8 win over Brown in the Ivy League season opener on Saturday, March 10.
The Tigers took a 6-0 lead and didn't look back en route to winning its 22nd straight game in the series with Brown. Princeton has now won the Ivy League opener every year since 1993, a streak of 15 years.
Five different players scored in the first 17 minutes to five the Tigers the 6-0 lead, with Pyle scoring twice. Charlotte Davis, Barb Previ, Mary-Kate Sivilli and Erin McMunn also scored.
Kaela McGilloway would end the drought for Brown with a goal at 13:35 but the Tigers took back over scoring the next three goals in a span on 2:17 to take a 9-1 lead with a little more than nine minutes to play in the first half. Bre Hudgins tallied back-to-back goals in the final seven minutes to end the first half 9-3 in favor of Princeton.
Brown would get only as close as five, as the Bears started the second on a 2-1 run to make it 10-5 at 21:46.
A Pyle goal and a pair by Gassaway pushed Princeton's lead to 13-5 four minutes later.
Brown had a 3-1 spurt midway through the second half but wouldn't score again as the Tigers rattled off four more goals in the final four minutes.
Gassaway scored six times and added one helper for seven points. Pyle had four goals and one assist for five points. McMunn scored one and assisted three times. Sam Ellis, Sarah Lloyd and Sivilli all had three-point efforts. Freshman Annie Woehling made five saves, including one on a free-position attempt.
Hudgins and McGilloway both finished with three points apiece. Danielle Mastro and Alexandra Crerend had two each. Isabel Harvery made three saves in the first 20:50 before being replaced by Kellie Roddy for the final 39:10. Roddy would made three saves. Both goalies allowed nine goals each.
The Tigers host No. 8 Virginia on Saturday, March 17 in game two of a double header with the men's team. The men's team will host Penn at 1 p.m. before the women's game at 5 p.m.
