Princeton was one out away from a victory in the first of two games held at Satow Stadium in New York City, but a two-run game-winning double ignited a Columbia sweep in the first half of back-to-back doubleheaders Saturday against the Princeton baseball team.

The Tigers will look for a weekend split Sunday when they play a second doubleheader; Cameron Mingo and Keelan Smithers will be the Princeton starters in those games.

Game One

It looked like the opener of the Princeton-Columbia weekend would provide a dramatic late victory for the Tigers. Unfortunately, while the late drama held true, it was Columbia that walked off with a 3-2 win at Satow Stadium.

A brilliant pitching battle between Princeton's Michael Fagan and Columbia's David Speer sent the game into the seventh inning at 1-1. That lasted all of one pitch, though, as Princeton freshman Zack Belski launched his first collegiate home run over the rightfield fence to open a 2-1 lead for the Tigers.

Fagan, who allowed only eight hits and struck out nine in the complete game, tried to make that run hold up, but a leadoff single to center field by John Kinne put him in immediate trouble. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Fagan got the next two hitters without allowing Kinne to advance.

Following a walk to Will Savage, Fagan hit David Vandercook to load the bases. Sophomore Robb Paller took advantage of that mistake, launching a two-run double to the right-centerfield fence, just over the outstretched glove of Jonathan York for the winning hit.

Both Belski and York had two-hit days for Princeton, and York drove in Princeton's first run during the fifth inning.

Game Two

Both Belski and Danny Hoy had two hits, and Hoy scored both of Princeton's runs, but Columbia scored at least one run in each of its first five innings to take an 8-2 win. The Lions had four home runs in the victory, which improved their Ivy League record to 7-3. Princeton, which will make up its Harvard doubleheader this weekend, is now 4-4.

Hoy opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first, but a two-run home run by Vandercook in the bottom of the inning gave the Lions a lead they would never relinquish. After runs in both the second and third inning, Columbia added two solo shots in the fourth.

Chad Powers took the loss for Princeton after allowing five runs over three innings.
