Box Score

An early offensive rally combined with seven shutout innings guided the Princeton baseball team to an 11-1 victory over UNC-Greensboro Sunday to wrap up the three-game series. Due to rain the game was called following the eighth inning.

The Tigers quickly got to work and went up 5-0 in the top of the first. Princeton capitalized on three hits and three walks, along with three wild pitches and two passed balls to establish its initial advantage.

Freshman pitcher Keelan Smithers earned the starting nod, fanning four over his 7.0 innings of work. He scattered five hits, a walk and a run in 27 batters faced in his first career victory.

While Princeton added another run in the second and Smithers held the Spartans without a hit until the fifth, Princeton continued to pounce in the top half of the frame. A Tyler Servais two-RBI single and a Danny Baer two-RBI double put the Tigers up 10-0.

Princeton’s offense continued to be productive down the stretch, adding another run on a Servais sacrifice fly in the sixth, before UNCG broke up the shutout in the bottom half of the inning.

Servais finished going 1-for-2 with three RBI, two walks and two runs.

The Tigers held a 13-6 hit advantage, but did commit two errors in the game.

Paul Tupper was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI, a run and a walk, while Danny Hoy was 3-for-5 with two runs. Rounding out Princeton’s multi-hit performances was Nick Hernandez who went 2-for-4 with three runs and a walk.

Princeton (3-7) will now prepare for a string of midweek games versus North Carolina (Mar. 18), Duke (Mar. 19) and Maine (Mar. 20).
