BALTIMORE (9/18/13) – The Loyola men’s soccer team rallied from a one-goal deficit, with the help of a penalty kick, to a 2-1 win over Princeton at Ridley Athletic Complex on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The win helped the Greyhounds stay undefeated at 5-0-1, while Tigers fall to 1-3 on the season.

Princeton took a 1-0 lead in the first half, in what was arguably the team’s best first half in its first four games this season. The Tigers doubled their season total of shots in the first, with six, two of which were on frame.

Sophomore Nico Hurtado scored his first career goal in the 38th minute with sophomore Brendan McSherry assisting on the goal to earn his first career point. A goal kick by Seth MacMillan led to the goal as McSherry gained possession of it on the "L" at centerfield. As he approached the attacking third he dished the ball off to Hurtado inside the 18-yard box and Hurtado fired between two defenders and past Thurman Van Riper in goal.

Van Riper left the game in the 65th minute after a collision with Patrick O'Neil. Zach Kane replaced him for the final 25 minutes. Both goalies finished with four saves each.

Loyola’s leading scorer Larry Ndjock netted the equalizer in the 67th minute on a penalty kick after a foul was called on Princeton after a shot rang off the cross bar and bounced back onto the field.

Ndjock would get a red card in the 83rd minute just one minute before the Greyhounds got the go-ahead goal. It would be the first of two red cards, as Loyola’s head coach was asked to leave the field in the 85th minute.

The game-winning goal came in the 84th minute when a boot was put into the center the field and Connor Thompson came up with possession. He pushed the ball up the middle to Stephen Dooley who fired into the left side netting.

The Tigers had a number of quality chances in the final 20 minutes. Jack Hilger had blast that splayed out Kane in the 75th minute. A header by Josh Miller nearly made it across the goal line as the ball flew in the air on the save and nearly dropped behind Kane as Miller ran on for the rebound. In the final 15 seconds of the game it was Princeton’s own keeper MacMillan that had a header that had to be stopped by Kane as all bodies got involved in the final minute when the Tigers were awarded a corner kick. On the other end MacMillan finished the game with three saves.

Shots fell in Princeton’s favor 15-13, while Loyola took two more corner kicks, 8-6.

The Tigers make a return trip to Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 22 when it takes on national runner-up Georgetown at 1 p.m.
