Box Score: Game One
Box Score: Game Two

The Princeton baseball team was unable to make up ground on first-place Columbia this weekend, going 1-3 in the series versus the Lions. The Tigers split Sunday’s doubleheader, opening with a 2-0 shutout win behind Mike Ford’s complete game, but were unable to find a final offensive rally in game two. In the series finale, Columbia managed to take the lead in the sixth and sustain its advantage for a 10-2 victory.

Turning Point of the Game: Princeton’s offense capitalized early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first of game one. With the bases loaded off a pair of hits, a walk and an error with one out, Alex Flink was hit by a pitch to send home the game-winning run. Mike Ford and the defense held off Columbia’s offense for the remainder of the game and a Danny Hoy sacrifice fly in the fourth added an insurance run.

Game two saw Columbia take a 2-0 lead in the third, before RBI singles from Ford and Steve Harrington tied things up in the bottom half of the frame. Princeton was unable to find another offensive rally, while the Lion offense managed to take advantage of its at-bats over the sixth through ninth frames. Columbia turned the momentum of the game around in the sixth with a pair of runs, adding two more in the seventh and four in the ninth.

Player/Pitcher of the Day: Mike Ford improved to 5-0 following his 2-0 complete game one victory. Ford tossed two strikeouts, scattered five hits and a walk in 29 batters faced over seven innings. He owns an Ivy-best 1.00 ERA and is one of the league’s leaders in wins.

At the plate, Ford had three hits and an RBI. In game two, he tied things up, 1-1, in the third on a two-out RBI single to shallow center field.

Beyond the Box: In the sixth inning of game two, with two outs and a runner on first Johnny Mishu came to the plate. With a full count, Mishu sailed the ball deep down the right field line over the outfield fence. Instead of being a game-tying two-run homer, to knot things up 4-4, the umpires called the ball just foul and the outfielder eventually concluded the inning striking out.

On Deck: Princeton (12-25, 9-7 Ivy) hosts its final non-conference game this Wednesday, Apr. 24 at 3:30 p.m. versus local rival Rider.
