Princeton Suffers 10-9 Overtime Loss at Penn

PHILADELPHIA (4/17/13) – Princeton women’s lacrosse suffered its first Ivy League defeat of the season as the No. 17-ranked Tigers fell 10-9 to Penn in overtime at Franklin Field.

Shannon Mangini scored at 2:16 in overtime, converting on her third free-position attempt of the six-minute overtime.

Princeton won the next draw control and held on for the final shot, but the shot by sophomore Erin Slifer with 33 seconds remaining was saved by goalie Lucy Ferguson who held onto the ball for the win.

The win gives Penn home field advantage for the Ivy League Tournament, May 3-5.

Penn didn’t have a lead in the game until 21:29 of the second half. With 12:36 to play Princeton held a two-goal lead, but Penn scored twice in the final seven minutes to force overtime.

Princeton took a 2-0 lead in the first 6:26. Bruno converted on the Tigers’ first free-position attempt at 25:09 and the team added its second in transition.

After junior netminder Caroline Franke made her first save of the day, on a shot by Caroline Bunting, Slifer picked up the ground ball and sent an outlet to freshman Liz Bannantine who fed sophomore Erin McMunn for the goal.

Penn knotted the game at 18:18 as they got two goals within 17 seconds by Meredith Cain and Bunting.

McMunn added her second of the day to put the Tigers back up by two, 3-2 as she scored on a man-up situation with Slifer earning the assist.

Bunting tied the game at 13:28 before Princeton regained the lead on goals by senior Mary-Kate Sivilli and junior Sarah Lloyd to go ahead 5-3 with 1:30 to play. Cain cut Penn’s deficit ton one before the half ended.

Mangini opened the second half with her first of three goals but senior Jaci Gassaway quickly put the Tigers back up by one, 6-5 with a free-position goal at 26:48.

The Quakers earned their first lead at 21:29 after goals from Bunting and Dickinson, exactly three minutes apart, 7-6.

The Tigers rattled off three straight with Slifer sandwiching a McMunn goal that put Princeton up 9-7 with 12:36 to play.

Bunting converted a free-position attempt making it a one-goal game before Mangini tied the game one minute later. The Quakers won the final draw of the second half and fired a shot at the pipe with 3:24 left. Franke gained control of the ball and the Tigers patiently waited for the final shot. McMunn ripped a shot wide but her shot was backed up to give Princeton another shot with 15 seconds left. Lloyd’s shot was collected by Ferguson as time expired.

Penn had a 26-19 advantage in shots and won one more ground ball, 13-12. Princeton held a 12-11 edge in draws. 

McMunn and Slifer both had four-point games, with McMunn scoring three times with one assist, and Slifer earning two goals and two assists. Franke made nine saves in goal.

Bunting paced the Penn offense with four goals, while Mangini had three and Cain with two. Ferguson made seven saves in net for the Quakers who improve to 8-4 overall and 6-0 in the Ivy League.

Now 8-5 on the season and 5-1 in the Ivy League, Princeton travels to Dartmouth for a noon game on Saturday, April 21. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Atlantic.
