Rutgers Blanks @PUSoftball in Final Tune-Up for Ivy South Play
In the Princeton softball team's final game before Ivy South play begins Saturday, Rutgers limited the Tigers to four hits in a 4-0 shutout Thursday afternoon in Piscataway.
Princeton's (20-12) tandem in the circle of Liza Kuhn (5-5) and Meredith Brown also limited Rutgers to four hits, but the Scarlet Knights (23-15) drew twice as many walks.
The second inning was the game-changer, with Rutgers using three singles, two walks and an error on a bunted ball to score three runs. The Scarlet Knights tacked on another in the sixth on a double steal following a leadoff single and the final walk of the day.
Princeton had its chances, leaving seven runners on base while Rutgers stranded nine. In the second inning, Princeton had runners on the corners with two outs before a strikeout ended it. In the fourth, Princeton reached three straight batters with one out, but two Tigers struck out to end that threat. Candy Button had a leadoff double in the sixth, but she was stranded at third base.
Princeton will return to Ivy League play Saturday and Sunday at Penn in a pivotal series. The Tigers, at 5-3 in the Ivy, stand two games back of Penn with 12 to play including these four head-to-head meetings in Philadelphia.
