Men's Soccer Wins Home Finale over Penn, 3-0

Max Gallin had a four-save shutout in his final game on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium Saturday night and the Princeton men's soccer team defeated Penn 3-0 to stand fourth in a competitive Ivy League race.

Cornell's overtime victory over Dartmouth knocked the Tigers out of the Ivy title race mathematically, as the Big Red are now 5-1 with 15 points and Princeton is 3-1-2 with 11. In between the two are Brown, at 4-0-2 with 14 points, and Dartmouth, at 4-2 with 12 points. The season's final weekend will send Princeton to Yale (1-2-3 Ivy) while Brown will head to Dartmouth, Harvard to Penn and Cornell to Columbia.

Princeton took a 1-0 lead into the break when rookie Thomas Sanner snuck a pass from Cameron Porter inside the left post in the 34th minute, and Sanner was the helper on the game's second goal in the 54th minute when he found Myles McGinley in the box for a long arcing shot that eluded Penn keeper Max Kurtzman.

Mark Linnville, also playing his final game at Roberts Stadium, headed home a Joe Saitta corner kick in the 76th minute for the final goal.

The 3-0 margin was Princeton's largest margin of victory since a 7-3 win over Seton Hall on Oct. 4, 2011, and the largest margin of victory in an Ivy League match since the Tigers beat Brown 3-0 on Oct. 9, 2010.

With the win, Princeton has claimed victory in two of its last three games, and the decisive margin of victory breaks a seven-match string in which every game was decided by no more than one goal, including two ties. Princeton went 2-3-2 during those seven games.

Princeton will head to Fairfield for a 7 p.m. game Wednesday in the team's final non-league match, one that replaces this past Tuesday's scuttled game at American due to Hurricane Sandy.
