BALTIMORE, Md. -- Picking up its first win of the new season, the Princeton softball team split on its second day at the UMBC-hosted tournament in Maryland.

Princeton fell 4-3 to Niagara as a rally from a four-run deficit came up just short in the seventh inning. Later Saturday evening, Princeton beat Iona 5-2.

The Tigers will face Canisius at 9:15 a.m. Sunday to close its participation in the event.

In Saturday's first game, rookie Meredith Brown (0-1) had gone through five scoreless innings by allowing just three hits before running into trouble in the sixth. After a leadoff single, Brown gave up a two-run home run to Becky Zill that put the Purple Eagles on the board. Niagara (1-6) got two more in the seventh against Liza Kuhn as Aileen Hinton led off the frame with a pinch-hit home run and Alexis Wayne cashed in one of two walks in the inning with a double.

Princeton (1-2) got three straight one-out hits to score its first run, brought home on a single by Nicole Ontiveros. Kelsey VandeBergh cashed in two more with a double, Princeton's fourth hit of the inning, but a groundout stranded VandeBergh on second as the tying run.

Princeton rolled to a four-run lead over Iona (6-5) on the way to its 5-2 win in Saturday's second game. Alyssa Schmidt brought home a Nicole Ontiveros triple with a sacrifice fly to pull the Tigers even in the bottom of the first, and the Tigers took a 3-1 lead two innings later on an RBI-double by Schmidt and another run scoring on a passed ball. Ontiveros had a two-run double in the fourth to put Princeton ahead 5-1.

Alex Peyton (1-1) went the distance in the circle and struck out one, giving up six hits.
