PRINCETON, N.J. (2/7/13) – Freshman Ryan Siiro scored his third goal of the year but it would be Princeton’s only goal of the night as the Tigers dropped a 7-1 game to St. Lawrence on Friday, Feb. 7 at Hobey Baker Rink.

Freshman goaltender Colton Phinney made 43 saves as the Saints doubled up the Tigers in shots, 50-25.

Gavin Bayreuther had a four-assist game, while Patrick Doherty and Justin Baker had three points apiece. Princeton did hold leading scorers Greg Carey and Matt Carey to just one point.

Doherty scored his team’s first two goals with a power-play goal as the lone goal of the first period before adding the eventual game winner at 8:55 of the second.

Princeton had a couple nice short-handed chances to start the first penalty kill of the game but St. Lawrence capitalized with 13 seconds remaining on the Eric Carlson tripping call. The Saints set up in power-play formation with Drew Smolcynski sending the puck across the blue line to Bayreuther who blasted a shot in from the point. Doherty tipped in the shot for the goal.

Doherty added his second goal when he was able to fight off his defender and circled in finding a room over the right shoulder of Phinney. Bayreuther and Gunnar Hughes cycled the puck for the assists.

Just 13 seconds into its first power-play opportunity, Princeton got on the board. It was perfectly set up as all five skaters played the puck, tic-tac-toe. Freshman Marlon Sabo and senior Alec Rush took the puck at the blue line, sending it to the left boards for senior Andrew Ammon. Ammon gave senior Andrew Calof the puck as he was open behind the goal. Calof started to skate behind the goal and as the Saints went with him, he sent the puck to Siiro at the right pipe and Siiro popped in the goal.

Baker expanded the lead to 3-1 at 11:00 of the second, when he one-timed a puck in the slot from Woody Hudson who got possession in front of his team bench.

A failed clear by Princeton’s penalty-killing unit led to St. Lawrence’s fourth goal as Bayreuther picked off the puck and sent it to Baker in the left circle. Baker sent a cross-ice pass to Matt Carey in the opposite circle and he one-timed it top shelf as the Saints grabbed a 4-1 lead at 15:35.

St. Lawrence added three more goals in the third period. Doherty set up Hughes in a give-and-go at 1:19 of the third and Hudson made it 6-1 at 6:31 redirecting a Bayreuther shot five hole. Ward added the seventh goal at 16:12 when he got a wraparound from Kyle Essery.

Matt Weninger made 24 saves in goal for St. Lawrence who improves to 10-14-3 on the season and 4-8-3 in league play.

Princeton now 4-18 overall and 3-12 in the ECAC faces No. 14 Clarkson tomorrow night at 7 p.m. The Golden Knights lost a 6-3 game at No. 3 Quinnipiac this eventng.
