Long before her current 16-season tenure as Princeton's women's soccer coach, Julie Shackford had a standout soccer career in high school and college in her home state of Virginia.

After adding a 20-season run as a successful college coach at Carnegie Mellon University and then at Princeton, Shackford has been recognized as one of 74 members of the Virginia-D.C. Soccer Hall of Fame, having been inducted Jan. 22 in Arlington, Va.

"It is humbling to join such an incredible group of players, coaches and people who have contributed to the game in the Virginia/D.C. area," Shackford said. "I was lucky that the area produced amazing coaches and players who helped me develop my love and passion for the game. I am grateful to all of my coaches, including my Braddock Road club coaches, Mike Laverghetta and John Ellis, my high school coach, Carolyn Rice, former NASL Washington Diplomat Gene Mishalow and John Daly, my college coach. I am most grateful that my parents signed me up for a sport they knew nothing about but provided opportunities they could never imagine."

The Virginia-D.C. Soccer Hall of Fame has been inducting members since 2001 and has assembled plenty of noteworthy names. Shackford is one of two Princeton women's soccer coaches in the group, along with April Heinrichs who coached one season at Princeton in 1990. Along with several past members of the U.S. Men's National Team, former USMNT coach Bruce Arena, who coached current Princeton assistant coach Scott Champ at the University of Virginia and preceeded Princeton alum Bob Bradley '80 as the U.S. national coach, is a Hall member.

Mia Hamm, perhaps the most known American women's soccer player ever, is also a Hall member and is a fellow alumna of Lake Braddock High School with Shackford.

But on induction day, no fellow Hall of Fame member meant more to Shackford than longtime friend and former teammate Jillian Ellis, who played with Shackford both on the Braddock Road club team in Burke, Va. Both went on to play at William and Mary, and both went into collegiate coaching. Ellis just capped a 12-season tenure at UCLA to take a youth coaching position with U.S. Soccer. Ellis had taken the Bruins at least as far as the NCAA College Cup semifinals eight times, including a 2004 run that paired UCLA and Princeton in the national semifinal.

That season was one of seven NCAA tournament appearances for Shackford and the Tigers, who were one game away from making the NCAA bracket in 2010.

Shackford's Virginia-D.C. Hall of Fame credits include:

"Julie played with the Braddock Road Bluebelles, the first Virginia girls team to win the United States Youth Soccer National Championship. She was a three-time Division I All-American at the College of William and Mary and a three-time member of the US Olympic Festival team. She was head coach at Carnegie Mellon for four seasons, where she built the women's soccer program from scratch. For the last 16 years Julie has been the head women's soccer coach at Princeton. Her team has made one NCAA College Cup semifinal appearance and earned seven NCAA tournament bids. She is the winningest soccer coach in the school's history. In 2004 Julie became just the fourth woman to be named National Coach of the Year. She has helped coach the U20 and U21 National teams, and currently works with the Region I Olympic Development Program."
