Kayj Shannon was Princeton's fourth leading scorer in his freshman season as he collected 35 goals with 11 assists, 16 steals and 24 drawn ejections. Shannon was a first-team All-Southern selection and opened his college career with goals in his first 11 games. Shannon had four multple-goal games to start that streak with a season high of four coming in a win over Harvard. He also scored three against Brown and two each against Santa Clara and Fordham and was the Southern Player and Rookie of the Week following that opening weekend. Shannon would add three more goals in wins over Navy and Johns Hopkins. He had a season-high three assists in the Eastern quarterfinals against Iona and scored a goal in both the semifinal and championship game.
Shannon starting playing water polo as a ninth grader at Harvard-Westlake School. A four-year letterwinner, Shannon served as a team captain as a senior and was the team's Most Valuable Player. Shannon was a first-team All-Mission League selection as a senior and is a three-time USA Water Polo Academic All-America in high school. Shannon also plays for the Los Angeles Water Polo Club as was a member of the Southern California ODP training team and Junior National training team in 2010. Shannon was a starter on the second-place team at the 2010 Junior Olympics.
