Men's Soccer Defeats Columbia on McSherry's First Career Goal, 2-1
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/19/13) - Sophomore Brendan McSherry's first career goal couldn't come at a better time as it gave the Princeton men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 19 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
McSherry's goal came in the 87th minute with juniors Cameron Porter and Julian Griggs earning assists. Griggs had the ball on the left side and sent a pass across the box to Porter, who fired a shot in on goal that McSherry tipped in at the near post.
With the win the Tigers remain undefeated in the Ivy League at 2-0-1, and hand Columbia's its first league loss of the year (0-1-2).
Columbia got on the board in the 15th minutes on a Will Stamatis unassisted goal. Stamatis took control of a loose ball in the box and slipped it past goalkeeper Seth MacMillan. MacMillan finished the game with three saves.
Sophomore Thomas Sanner scored the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 58th minute.
Princeton outshot Columbia 19-6 in the game and took 10 corner kick's to Columbia's one.
The Tigers travel to Harvard next Saturday, Oct. 26. The Crimson are currently 2-1 in the Ivy League after defeating Brown 2-1 this evening.
