College Sports Madness Tabs Rasheed Ivy Preseason Player of the Year
College Sports Madness named Princeton women's basketball senior Niveen Rasheed the Ivy League Preseason Player of the Year and to the All-Conference Preseason First Team, it was announced Wednesday. Sixth season head coach Courtney Banghart was tabbed the Preseason Coach of the Year, as the duo earns their first honors of the 2012-13 campaign.
The reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, Rasheed is coming off a decorated junior season. The forward picked up Full Court Mid Major and Net Scouts All-America accolades, and was an All-Ivy and ECAC All-Star First Team selection following 2011-12. Rasheed, who was a USBWA Player of the Year nominee, concluded the year leading the Tigers in nearly every statistical category and was one of the league's top performers throughout the year. She averaged 16.4 points, 8.8 boards, 2.9 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
Banghart has guided a flourishing Princeton program to three consecutive Ivy League titles over her tenure. In 2012, the Tigers earned the conference's first-ever women's basketball national ranking, concluding the year No. 24 in the country by the AP. Princeton finished the year at 24-5 and posted its second perfect 14-0 Ivy slate in three years.
The Tigers open up 2012-13 in Philadelphia at St. Joseph's on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. The squad's home opener is on Tuesday, Nov. 20 versus Rider at 7 p.m.
