TigerBlog On Niveen Rasheed

The most prolific player in Princeton women’s basketball history, Niveen Rasheed ’13, has signed a professional contract to play for Ippokratis Kos of the first division in Kos, Greece.

“As sad as I am that I won’t be returning to Princeton in the fall, I cannot wait to embark on this new journey in my life,” said the former Tiger co-captain. “I thank my Princeton experience for everything it has taught me throughout my four years. It has made me a better basketball player and an overall better person that will hopefully make for a smooth transition into my professional career. I am excited to start my career off in beautiful Kos, Greece and am looking forward to what the future holds.”

Princeton’s first AP All-America, Rasheed carved a new landscape for Ivy League women’s basketball during her career. Despite missing half of her sophomore season due to an ACL injury, she concluded her tenure ranked fourth in points with 1,617, among numerous other statistical rankings in the Tigers’ all-time record book.

The 2012 and 2013 unanimous Ivy Player of the Year and the 2010 Ivy Rookie of the Year, Rasheed was a three-time First-Team All-Ivy selection. Her recognition was also bolstered by numerous national honors.

As a junior she was selected to the USBWA Player of the Year Midseason Watch List, solidifying her stance as one of the elite players in the nation. As a senior she was named to the Naismith Watch List, Wooden Award Preseason Top 30, State Farm “Wade Watch” list and the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Midseason Watch List. Along with her AP All-America Honorable Mention honor, making her only the third Ivy woman to be selected, Rasheed was named a WBCA Division I Coaches’ and Full Court Mid-Major All-America.

“Today is another great example that Princeton opens doors to whatever is your passion,” said Tiger head coach Courtney Banghart. “It's a very exciting time for Niveen Rasheed and all of Tiger nation, as Niveen signs her first pro basketball contract. Greece and Team Ippokratis Kos are getting a fantastic player, a winner, a quality teammate and a relentless competitor. It has been a tremendous honor watching Niveen earn her stripes for the past four years as she's won four straight Ivy League titles and was named an AP Honorable Mention All-America her senior season. We all look forward to supporting Niveen on this next big journey.”

Rasheed and the Class of 2013 guided Princeton to four consecutive Ivy League titles and berths into the NCAA tournament, a feat unmatched in the conference. During that four-year span the Tigers went 54-2, tying them for the winningest class in Ivy League basketball history with Penn’s men’s Class of 1996.

After such an incredible career at Princeton, Rasheed will look to continue her success overseas. Undoubtedly there will be a void in Jadwin Gym come November, but the Ivy League champion and NCAA tournament banners will serve as a constant reminder of Rasheed’s pioneering contributions to the program.
