Women’s Basketball Picked to Win Fifth Straight Ivy League Title

For the fifth consecutive season the Princeton women’s basketball team has been picked to win the Ivy League, it was announced Thursday in the league’s preseason media poll.

Coming off their fourth straight conference title, the Tigers earned 130 points and 13 first-place votes in the poll. Princeton was not the unanimous choice to win the league, as Harvard garnered 120 points and three first-place votes and Penn picked up 98 points and a first-place vote to round out the top-three.

Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown and Columbia were tabbed fourth through eighth, respectively.

"We all know that it doesn't matter where you start, but rather where you end up,” said seventh season head coach Courtney Banghart. “I like this Princeton team a lot; they are hungry to get better and excited to contribute to the successful Tiger tradition. This year is one of new faces and new roles, but we will rely on the same pillars of toughness, competing, sharing the ball and playing with joy to be our foundation.”

The Tigers are coming off a 22-7, 13-1 Ivy season, where they earned their fourth straight NCAA tournament berth. The squad returns 11 letterwinners, including All-Ivy senior Kristen Helmstetter and junior point guard Blake Dietrick. Princeton will look to fill the holes left from the four-player Class of 2013 with three talented newcomers.

“We have a very challenging non-conference schedule that will prepare us well for the Ivy League gauntlet. It's an honor to have the respect of the voters, and I'm certain that this crew will work hard everyday to earn the results they want, day-in and day-out. College basketball is not a sprint, but rather a marathon and we're hard at work laying our foundation," concluded Banghart.

Princeton’s road to the Ivy crown begins with its season opener on Sunday, Nov. 10 at local rival Rutgers at 2 p.m. The team’s home opener is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 17 versus Marist at 2 p.m.
